Summer 2022 - Quelbé with Kwabena
Sing St. John’s summer program last year focused on Quelbé songs, which are native
to the Virgin Islands. Led by Mr. Glenn “Kwabena” Davis, assisted by Ms. Rahshek’ka Titre, the students had a ball, learning to sing and play 5 traditional songs on new instruments, and playing traditional Virgin Islands dance games. Although the program was a lot of fun, teaching Quelbé to children is important in the preservation of Virgin Islands culture: "Quelbé is the youngest of our native music forms, and the young people need to connect to those songs because they have historical value.” |
