St. John  Recovery Choir's
Love City Soul Concert

St. John Recovery Choir (SJRC) presented their Love City Soul concert in April of 2022 on Zoom to a packed call! This concert was a revival of the Motown concept that SJRC was formed by as the island recovered from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The choir and audience sang along to many of our favorite soul tunes from the 60’s and 70’s, including The Supremes, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin. SJRC also made a music video to a lesser known Ray Charles tune: “One Drop of Love.” All of these tunes can be found on our YouTube channel and on SoundCloud.
The Recovery Choir's Winter Spring Oral Tradition Session Music is here and also available on our Soundcloud Page.

"Singing eases the mind and heart. All I ever wanted to do was sing. Thanks to the Recovery Choir, I was able to do that and more. To be a part of a group, a family that comes together to sing more than eases the mind and heart; it nurtures the body, your mind and soul."

St. John Recovery Choir is a joyful community choir, open to all levels of experience and ability. Members are provided with recordings, lyric sheets and sheet music. We perform holiday music, Motown, Civil Rights songs and songs that celebrate our local culture in concerts and community events. Our membership fee is $50 per session for those that can afford it, and waived upon request.

"I joined the St. John Recovery Choir as a way to spend more time with my daughter. I’d always loved singing but never had any formal training so I had some reservations. However, Ms. Kristen was a great instructor. Her patience and kind spirit were exactly what I needed to be able to assimilate into what became a very welcomed activity in my life. I looked forward to our practices and performances. I was able to make great music, meet new people, and spend time with my daughter. Recovery indeed!"

For our first season, we sang exhilarating Motown tunes to uplift ourselves and our community.

The next year we sang Songs of Resilience.

For 2020 - 2021 we will sing songs from the South African and African American oral traditions,  Caribbean and holiday songs.

"Joining the St John Recovery Choir was one of my better moves, I know the value the choir adds to and enhances my life as a participant.  I believe there are numerous and important benefits the choir provides collectively as part of the community, including the positive tendrils of contentedness that spread throughout our special island through song.  We are fortunate to be directed and inspired by the tremendous talent, creativity, and magic that Kristen Carmichael-Bowers brings at the helm of The Recovery Choir."
